What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Cardboard and Concern

Today’s magnificent thing was recommended by the ever-lovely Alison & Don of Adventures in Wonderland.

I’ve seen some wonderful art from makers that use recycled materials, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more amazing than the cardboard sculptures by Josh Gluckstein. The things this man can do with recycled boxes and packing paper have to be seen to be believed. Using cardboard and other recycled materials, non-toxic glue, and a bit of paint, he’s able to create sculptures that perfectly mimic their wildlife inspiration.

“Animals have always been a central theme in my artwork. Inspired by my extensive travels and volunteering through Asia, East Africa, and South America, I have sought to capture the presence of some of the most majestic animals I have seen in the wild. It’s my ambition to raise awareness for endangered species through my art and contribute to their preservation.”

– About Josh Gluckstein Artist

When asked why he favored cardboard in his animal sculptures, he replied that during the pandemic lockdown, he wasn’t able to get the materials with which he had been working previously. However, he realized that because we were all getting more and more things delivered from online vendors, cardboard was readily available and he found it to be incredibly versatile as a medium.

In addition to working with recycled materials, the artist does even more good in the world by supporting organizations like the WWF-UK, Born Free, Helping Rhinos, and other endangered species charities.

These are fabulous. I really like the way he incorporates the texture of the cardboard into the sculpture to suggest the texture of the animal being depicted. I especially like the elephant’s trunk but I think the mammoth might be my favourite. Or maybe the tiger.
