What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Hard Meets Soft

Colin Roberts

L.A.-based artist Colin Roberts does things with perspex (plexiglass) that I never thought possible. His pieces are gorgeous and whimsical and many of them employ cultural imagery from my childhood through the present. I first saw his stained glass-looking Cookie Monster above and knew I needed to know more. Who would even think to make such a thing?

Roberts clearly enjoys turning the art form of stained glass on its head. But though his perspex creations might evoke a chuckle, they’re also staggeringly beautiful, with rich colors and highly-reflective finishes. You could use his pillow sculptures in place of a disco ball!

“I was inspired to use the pillow shape because it’s an object that is so common, yet as humans, we all have a special relationship to, without realizing it. A pillow is something every human can recognize and long for when needing rest. It represents comfort, rest, and sleep for our mind, body, and soul.”

  1. I have definitely never seen anything like this artist’s work. I love the whimsy of it and the idea of making something look soft and curvy when it is composed of lots of shards of hard, solid perspex. Watching those process videos provides some insight into the degree of planning and thought involved in composing such forms too. It looks like an incredibly complicated jigsaw puzzle. My favourite piece is the iridescent pillow but I think they are all great.
