Polish textile artist Karolina Bąkowska’s work feels like spring and happiness to me, and I love it all! Her joyous use of color combined with her astounding patchwork skills combine to make eminently cheerful art. In addition to patchwork, Bąkowska employs a number of machine- and hand-embroidery techniques, and her work is truly lovely. But though I thought they looked quite sophisticated, it turns out they’re not impossible to make.
Watching her videos (which I found very soothing), I was particularly struck by the fact that she didn’t worry about her stitches being perfect. Her process is much more organic and casual that that. I am NOT good at sewing in a straight line, but I really felt encouraged to try my own little quilted art project thanks to her tutorials. I’ll let you know how it turns out…
Bąkowska freely shares her knowledge and skill. She not only sells her patterns and everything you’ll need to make your own textile art, she also has tutorials on her YouTube Channel. And her buyers say she is also very quick to respond when someone needs help. What a generous artist!
You can follow Karolina Bąkowska on her B-craft website and on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, and you can purchase her PDF patterns to make your own lovely works on Etsy.

These pieces are delightful. I appreciate the organic look to them that you point out but I also think the artist has a keen eye for the visual textures within the fabrics and is skilled at curating and placing textiles that perfectly communicate their ideas. And I agree that this looks encouragingly achievable. I am an inept and pragmatic seamstress and I have to hand sew because I cannot work a machine but I think even I could have a crack at some small scale pieces in this style.

They seem totally doable, likely because I haven’t actually attempted one yet…
