Painter Daniel Arthur clearly loves cats. His paintings of felines, both from the IRL observations of his own house demons and from internet memes, are pure genius. He manages to capture both the ridiculousness of the animals and their dignity and strong sense of self. They don’t care that we find them funny, and that makes his paintings feel very, very real to me.
Though he was born in Brazil, Arthur’s family relocated to Portugal when he was just nine. They were hoping to start a new life untroubled by their home region’s periodic military and guerilla occupations. Once in Portugal, the family felt safer and began to relax. Young Daniel finally got a chance to explore his artistic side. While studying art, Daniel supported himself by selling “Bad Portraits,” quick sketches of the bustling streets.
But though he worked steadily with a number of well-known artists, it wasn’t until his first painting below, “Fight Me,” became internet famous that his current work really began to take off. I honestly love it all.
