Paper artist Diana Beltran Herrera has a process. She was born in Colombia where many trees are harvested for paper. Early on in her career, she realized she wanted to lean into the paper industry to make her art.
“Birds have their nests in the trees. We cut trees to obtain paper. I use paper to create my birds.”
One by one, Hererra creates each feather in Illustrator, then assembles them into her amazing bird and nature sculptures. I feel like if a tree got to choose what it became, most of them would happily agree to become Herrera’s lovely nature-based pieces. Her remarkable art has even been featured on stamps in Colombia and Brasil. What an amazing talent!

These are really lovely. I like the fact that the medium is still legible as paper but the artist has captured something of the quality of feathers in the shape and visual texture that it does do a bit of a number on the brain at times. I like the colour choices too. I wish pelicans were actually those colours.

I had that same thought about pelicans! We love the birds we get regularly, and they’re definitely fancier than the ones you see in the city, but I often wish they were bolder colors. Come on, grackles, sparrows, and egrets! Get your rainbow on!
