Etsom·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once in a while.
I know, I know. It’s been months since I posted a new edition of Etsomnia™. What can I say? It’s mostly real estate that’s keeping me up these days. That said, odd cat-related art has been creeping into my social media ads, and I thought it was time for a longer look.
I love cats. I love everything about cats. Honestly, were it not for the stigma and the mess (and the allergens)(and Beloved), I’d have a whole lot of them. Alas, I must content myself with just The One, so instead I’ve been looking for cat art. Or maybe the internet decided I should be looking for cat art and now it just finds me. Not sure.
I tried to limit the items below to things that were strictly art, but there were a few things I just couldn’t resist. (Like the cat bikini above.)
I quite like this fine fellow! By GappaHandmadePotteryOh brother. You’d be surprised by the sheer quantity of bathroom-related cat art on Etsy! By KekoaDesignCoCat memes abound!Of all of the cats-in-formal-costumes genre on Etsy (and there are a lot), I think this artist does the best job. It’s clearly an actual painting and not a 5-minute Photoshop job. Can’t let our little house demon see it, though. She’d get too full of herself! By Kate Brindley of BrindleyIllustrationDon’t bother acting surprised. You knew this one was going to get weird. Just fantastic! I would hang this n my house in a hot minute. By ArtMalynskaYou wouldn’t believe the horrifying stuff that came up when I searched for “cat art”. This is a backpack sporting a sad-looking cat the size of a 4 year old. Can you imagine waiting in line behind this lady?I enjoyed the whole genre of cats inserted in famous artworks, but I didn’t see this coming! By DecoXOXLeonardo DiCatrio. I am not making this up.Seriously adorable. TBH I’d prefer that his middle finger was up, but either way, it’s a great painting! By DanTavisIllustration who clearly deserves his own post! That is very much what it’s like to live with a cat. I get the whole ugly portrait craze, but I don’t want to give the nugget a complex. By WonderMockupsWhile most of the funny or ugly pet portraits don’t do much for me, I absolutely love this one! You really get a sense of what it’s like living with the little bugger. By ArtElenaBerezinaAnother great example of cats cleverly inserted into famous art. By CatisseLeChat (whose shop is definitely worth a visit!)
I want to ask who can possibly resist cat art but you did include those very weird paintings of cats with cryptid looking owners that I find very easy to resist, and maybe even repellant in the case of the Leonardo DiCaprio one. How very Dr Moreau. I do, however, absolutely love the cats in the Mondrian. I think my youngest son would be smitten by that one.

I even like the less-than-gorgeous stuff. Cats are the best!

Yes, me too. I try not to watch too many of the rescue ones coz they break my heart, but each little life saved is a triumph.
