Fiber artist Molly Burgess finds the most delicious, the most luxurious, the most expensive-looking fabrics, and then turns them into bugs. Who knew bugs could be formal? Burgess also does custom orders, and can even make you a fabulous insect from your wedding dress. (I feel like a bride cool enough to make that nutty choice is a bride I’d like to know.) The sculptures are so beautiful, I don’t even mind the spiders (mostly).
Burgess turned to art as a refuge when her dyslexia caused her excessive trouble processing letters and numbers, and it quickly became her passion. After honing her fabric-working skills making window treatments and bedding, she turned her attention to the creation of soft, luxurious sculptures. Burgess’s art is mostly focused on bugs, though she does also throw in the occasional crustacean, isopod, or bat for fun. But she hit upon her style purely by coincidence.
“Shortly after starting out on my own, I decided I would make a cicada art piece for my bug loving friend, Sarah May. Having been a seamstress for a decade at that point fiber was the medium I was most familiar with, so I figured why not give soft sculpture a try. My first attempt did not go well. In fact I went through a few patterns and prototypes before I finally created one that I was happy with. I loved the process so much I decided to keep it going with different insect species.”

I love this SO much—and I would absolutely get married wearing one except I am already married and not planning on changing that, lol. But WOW.

As a fan of minibeasts, I think these fabric creations are wonderful. I would love to own many of them.

I was thinking it would be so cool to have a whole wall of them with an outdoor-looking light in the center, like it attracted them.
