I don’t spend a lot of time listening to Celine Dion. My ex was an incredible singer, and Dion was her favorite. We listened to a LOT of the artist’s music when we were together, so my associations with her music aren’t the most comfortable. That said, I just watched Celine Dion’s performance at the Olympics Opening Ceremony, and after learning what she’s going through, I found it tremendously moving. The moment towards the end when Dion looks out across Paris just broke my heart for her.
If you haven’t already seen it, I recommend you watch I Am: Celine Dion, the recent documentary about the artist’s health. The terrifyingly-honest film talks about her health struggles and her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome. This poor woman has given the world so much, and is now suffering with such a terrible affliction. Happily, after the documentary debuted, medical breakthroughs were achieved that have helped her recover some of what she’d lost.
Below is a segment from the Today Show explaining her struggle. It is hard to watch, but I wanted you to see this first so you could fully appreciate how moving her Olympics performance really is.
NBC Sports has disabled embedding of their videos, so to see this life-changing performance, you will need to click the link below. I truly recommend you watch it, if not for the performance, then for the unrelievable Dior gown.

This is silly, but perhaps it will amuse you. I have never loved Celine Dion for one reason: Someone once (foolishly) told me that I looked like her and…
I found it WILDLY insulting! (ducks rotten tomatoes from Celine fans) I think she’s a very talented singer and one of the “greats” but she’s NOT THAT PRETTY! AT ALL!
I know, the ego, it’s ugly 😉

I can see how your angles are similar – high cheekbones, well-defined chin – but you are definitely prettier!

It’s the NOSE, lol (which is also odd because I have loved many French nose and find them often delightful–but a witch nose runs in my family and … I was always glad I didn’t get it. Yet). It’s funny how one silly thing can just sour something.

Celine Dion did Édith Piaf proud. She doesn’t have the timbre of Piaf’s voice but the passion was there in spades. Cheers!

An excellent assessment! Honestly, Piaf’s tight vibrato always kind of grated on me anyway, but there was something very special about her.

Celine Dion’s voice has always been more ‘pure’, but I fell in love with Piaf 50 years ago, so she’ll always be the benchmark for that song. Still a brilliant version though.
