New Hampshire-based photographer Karen Jerzyk seemed like a perfect fit for Halloween week. Her photos have been described as haunting and otherworldly, and they explore themes like identity, loss, isolation, and mental illness. Jerzyk is self taught, and worked as a photographer in the music industry before she hit upon the idea of shooting complicated scenes in abandoned buildings. She describes her style as “future-past,” which seems very apt.
The photographer’s recent sheet-ghost series manages to be a little sad and funny at the same time, while her personal demon series (not her name for it, just what it looks like to me) is more than a bit terrifying. Jerzyk is best known for her astronaut series, which usually feature a lone astronaut (alien?) in awkward situations with forced, Wes Anderson-style colors and sets. The series is strangely touching, and I feel like these poignant, lonely images are going to stick with me. All her photos are remarkable and remarkably memorable, really.
