Quilling With Clay?

Liska Flower

When I first spotted the art by Liska Flower, I was positive it was made with textiles. Her clouds and waves seem so soft, they have to be fluffy fabric, right? Wrong. It’s clay! She first draws her subject using markers or paints them with watercolor, then she gets to work making tiny strips of flattened Japanese air-dry clay which she nudges into the shapes on her canvas. No matter how many times I look at one of her works in progress, my brain just cannot process how it works.

The artist’s full name is Alisa Lariushkina, and she’s based in Vilnius, Sweden. The young artist has only been at her craft for a little under 10 years, but her skill level is incredibly high. I’m always interested in textural art, and her high-relief landscapes make me want to touch them all. Her technique seems sort of like quilling, but with clay rather than paper.

“I’m a self-taught artist, been working with air-dry polymer clay for about six years in my own technique. Each piece of clay I form with my hands and then glue the pieces together. I make figures, ornaments basically in animal theme; and also recently I started making framed landscapes.”

You can follow the amazing Liska Flower Clay Art on her website and on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

These are lovely pieces. The visual texture is so interesting. As you observe, they have the quality of soft textiles but they also remind me of thickly applied paint. The look very tactile.
