Legendary Glamma

Margret Chola

An elderly woman in rural Zambia has become the newest accidental fashion icon after agreeing to “play dressup” with her fashionista granddaughter. Margret Chola was just as surprised as the rest of the world when in her eighties, fashion press started wanting interviews. But though the octogenarian says she was just being a good sport, there’s definitely something iconic in the woman’s playful poses and powerful attitude. The granddaughter who started all this is Diana Kaumba, a high-fashion stylist based in NYC. She was visiting her family in Zambia, and had completely overpacked. Rather than letting her fierce, unworn clothes go to waste, she got the idea to try them on her grandmother and take some pictures. Chola really got into the exercise, and once her granddaughter posted the photos, they got loads of attention.

“I was so nervous when I posted that first photo. I left my phone for 10 minutes and in those 10 minutes there were 1,000 likes. My mind was blown. The comments were flying in and people were asking for more.”

Since she began posting photos of her grandmother, Kaumba has been hired by a number of young women to style their grandmothers. What a great business model!
