I love nothing more than an inexpensive DIY refresh of a space, and painted floors and stairs are a great way to update without blowing the budget. Also, for someone like me who is wildly allergic to animal hair, a painted rug will win out over a real one every time. Today, we’re looking at painted floor and stair inspirations. Fun!

I love the idea of them. After the hurricane, we needed to replace the whole first floor, and we ended up getting engineered, hand-scraped bamboo floors. They look great, but they haven’t worn particularly well, and they can’t be refinished. Not our best idea. The painted floor idea, however, is giving me hope! Maybe we can get one more life out of these floors before we need to scrap them and replace them with solid hardwood.

Ah, this prompts a memory of my dad, having seen a painted concrete floor in Santa Fe, spending a weekend tearing up the carpet in my parent’s bedroom, not sealing/leveling/etc a single thing and then painting the floor a shiny apricot pastel that…words actually fail me somewhat, it was so…peculiarly TERRIBLE. It felt like you were stepping into something liquid and like the floor … floated. #leaveittoapro Kinda classic “my dad.”

How funny! I can imagine it. Apricot is a particularly rancid color when not used cautiously, and shiny makes it so much worse. Love it!

I am drawn to the examples where the wood is still visible beneath the painted details and, as a fan of ghost signs, I really like the advertising stair treads. I have never painted a floor but I have been considering painting the ugly concrete pad that is our patio area.

A friend suggested I paint the floor in my guest bedroom but I was a bit skeptical at first and at a loss as to how/where to start. Thanks for this post. I LOVE these ideas though. Thanks for posting!

So glad you enjoyed them! I think it sounds like big fun to design and execute something like a painted “rug.” Beloved would murder me, but I’m thinking about it anyway…
