What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Smoke and Mirrors (and Robots)

OK Go

Yes, OK Go. Again. I can’t help it. Their music is very listenable and their music videos are each like a lesson in creative practical cinematography. The band, however, has acknowledged that their most recent effort has turned their production complexity up to 11. While the effects are all still managed practically (translation: in-camera/in real life as opposed to in a computer in post-production), the creatives realized that the mirror movements were too complex and precise to be done by human hands. They got the brilliant idea to instead use robotics to their advantage.

I thought watching the music video through for the fourth or fifth time that I understood roughly what was involved in making the technological marvel, but after watching PMI’s Behind the Project video, I realized just how little I understood. They pre-visualized the video for many months, using both computer-based and miniature models of the set to finalize the choreography for humans, the robots, and the camera. choreography. I enjoyed watching the process every bit as much as the final video, and I’m sure I’ll re-watch both over and over. OK Go’s superpowers always include a magical ability to find the best experts for the job, but this one went way above and beyond.
