American artist Susan Abbott is know the world over for her delicious, colorful paintings which transform the ordinary into something special. She grew up in an artsy household; her father was an artist and graphic designer and her mother was a seamstress, so she was surrounded by creativity and art books and supplies from birth. It makes me wonder who I would be if I’d grown up in a more creative household…
After graduating Summa Cum Lauda from The Maryland Institute College of art, Abbott then went on to get an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting. There was never a time when Abbott didn’t think of herself as an artist, and that consistency of purpose has resulted in her being not just a beautiful painter, but an extraordinarily skilled one.
“There simply aren’t many…who can match her level of expertise. What makes her painting so interesting, however, is the tension between the dazzling display of skill and the underlying idea.”
-Washington Post
While I don’t know enough about art to fully understand her technical skill, her work definitely makes me feel things, and I can tell it’s going to stay with me. Like chilled fruit on a hot day, Abbott’s summery colors and spare details are an absolute balm for my brain.
You can see all of Susan Abbott’s refreshing works on her website and on Instagram and Facebook.

Her handling of light/shadow is amazing. I need a LOT MORE wall space for everyone I want to collect! #neverdownsizenever

I know what you mean. Between budget and space, my acquisition abilities are limited. If I won the lottery, the first thing I’d do is buy a house just for my art, then acquire one piece of art from every artist I’ve ever profiled. Just the art should take care of at least a million or so…

She definitely captures a summer vibe in her artwork as the colour palette makes me think of warm summer sunsets and bowls of sorbet.
