The remarkable piece of fiber art above appeared in my feed this week, and my first thought was that tilapia has never looked so good. Today, we’re checking out the artwork by the fiber artist Emily Taylor, otherwise known as The Collage Quilter. Collage quilts are made using a wide variety of different raw-edged fabric pieces which are layered to create the effect of paints.
Taylor is very generous with her considerable knowledge and experience. She’s published books and puts out video tutorials on her YouTube channel, and on her website, you can buy patterns, kits, supplies, and some wonderful fabrics.
You can see all of The Collage Quilter’s remarkable works on their website and on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

Quilting seems to be a “thing” with some people..I haven’t caught the bug.

It seems awfully tedious to me, but I am interested in the results.

Amazing! It really is collage but with textiles and the artist does an incredible job of curating the fabrics to really elevate the designs. Predictably, I adore the cats but I think my favourite is the dog “mugshots”. I am going to check out their Instagram now because I think this fabric art is so charming.

As a textile artist, I’ve used this technique a great deal–but I also am okay with these pieces being washed, as the raw edges fray and it’s kind of delightful. I make patches that way and they are lovely and continually changing. Before I got sick I had dropped a wad of cash on a paper pieced quillt kit (it’s expert level, this beginner hates beginning) and naturally also changed the over 100 colors colorway.
Someday I’ll update that I’ve actually started it, but obvs my concentration was not so great this past year 😉

To be continued, that’s all.
