I have piles and piles of talented musicians about whom I will one day get around to writing. Honestly, there’s such a backlog, I could almost make it a separate blog if I had the time (which I definitely do not, so don’t go getting any ideas…). Usually, when I hear a musician or musical group that I want to share, I schedule it for some time in the future, typically later that week. But the musical posts take much longer to prepare than the rest, and I don’t always have the time to do the research and listen to all or most of their recordings then write the post on the scheduled day. Plus, I don’t always feel like writing about them on the day I’ve arbitrarily assigned, so they often get postponed. But when this magical video turned up in my feed, I needed to stop and research and listen and write the post right away. What a musician this artist is!
Eric Olsith made his name on TikTok, a platform I generally consider to be non-serious when it comes to musicians. I was apparently entirely wrong. This marvelous artist works really hard to create beautiful instrumental and vocal cover videos, plus he writes original music that has kind of a Hozier vibe, and I’m finding it all lovely and soothing and deliciously listenable. My favorites are the videos of him singing pop songs in six parts, reminiscent of Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek. The harmonies are gloriously lush, and his vocal range is truly epic. I’m also loving the short videos where he creates a loop by playing an iconic song intro or instrumental playing every note on a different instrument. I have listened to a few of them on repeat, and they’re remarkably complex, as no doubt is the editing process. Olsith seems to play every stringed instrument known to man, plus keyboards, kalimba, and heaven knows what else. What a talented guy!
