What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

By the Sea…

Mark Smith

Ceramicist Mark Smith creates whimsical pieces inspired by his childhood by the sea. He pays homage to everything from the wildlife to the architecture, to the ships that fascinated him. All his pieces have a realistic, weather-worn look about them, and his regular use of recycled objects in his sculptures adds to their mystique.

“When I produce a piece it becomes a narrative, the tale of a journey. Objects discovered on the shoreline find themselves becoming part of the story. Ships, boats, and wrecks are the main fabric of the work, made from clay that has the textures of metal and wood objects salvaged, press moulded, and patched together. They produce a variety of forms that look as though they have sailed the Seven Seas.” About Mark Smith Old Courthouse Gallery

My parents own one of his fish pieces! I love the whales.
