The newly-released video Confessions II – The Film dropped this week, and I’m really enjoying it. Madonna’s short film serves as the visual companion to her fifteenth studio album Confessions II and features the first six songs from the album. It premiered last week at the Tribeca Festival to great acclaim.
I have always been fascinated by Madonna. I find her ability to constantly reinvent herself endlessly interesting. For example, in 2023, after her use of filler and plastic surgery sparked some nasty criticism from the press and negative reactions from her fans, she resolved to never use filler again and to have her implants removed. For someone so often judged on her looks, I thought her ability to listen and evolve was both self aware and rather brave. Okay, yes, she’s still smoothed out and lifted, and the BBL isn’t going anywhere, but at least she’s human again, and I am grateful for that.
One of the songs in the film is called Danceteria, and that’s the name of the club we both frequented in the early eighties. I just missed her so many times, it became kind of a running joke with me and the door guys. Of course, in true Madonna style, it’s full of weird fantasy and raunchy stuff (i.e. orgy vibes meet crotch lasers), and people are going to have BIG feelings about it. I look forward to hearing people’s impressions as much as I am enjoying the film.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy Confessions II – The Film as much as I did. And in case you (like me) want to geek out and understand all the references, Easter eggs, and messages hidden in the film, below the video is a track-by-track review. It’s not the most astute analysis ever, but it’s okay.
You can follow Madonna on her website and on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Spotify, and Facebook.
