When They Sleep…

Miriam Hoffmann

Today, we’re looking at a fascinating young artist and internet influencer. When I think of that term, I think of shallow, daft young people who are making way too much money for creating content that adds nothing good to the world. However, between yesterday’s beautiful pianist, Flavio Belardo, and today’s wonderful painter, I may have to adjust my assumptions. These are the wonderful portraits by Atlanta native Miriam Hoffmann. The young mom began making art when her world, like so many of our own worlds, got much smaller in 2020. At the start of the pandemic, Hoffmann suddenly lost her job and became an unintentional stay-at-home mom to her three very little ones. While she enjoyed her time with the kiddos, she decided that when they slept, she’d take an online art course, just so she had something for herself. Hoffmann took to art like a duck to water.

Her process is really interesting to watch. She begins with oil pigment sticks, then fills in details with a combination of oils and charcoal. Her results look, to my admittedly untrained eye, like they could have been painted by a master. What an amazing understanding of light and shadow she has. Her painted ladies’ eyes are especially amazing to me. So realistic! Happily, there is lots of making-of videos on her TikTok and YouTube channels, and I find her process really satisfying.

You can follow Miriam Hoffmann on her website and on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

Oooh! Her pieces are lovely. She makes the skin look so smooth and silky. Something about the porcelain skin tones and style makes me think of John Singer Sargent’s portraits.

I think there are influencers who are just regurgitating “teaching granny to suck eggs” type content to generate clicks and get sponsorship deals. All power to them but I have zero interest in that. And then there are people who just feel compelled to share their creativity or interests in the hope of spreading knowledge, inspiration, skills, ideas, or even just joy and happiness. That is what I choose to fill my Instagram feed with.
