Modern Drama

Gregory Lysak

When I first spotted the painting above, all I could think was holy cow. (Okay, maybe I didn’t think cow…) These are the dramatic, magnificent paintings by UK-based Ukranian artist Gregory (A.K.A. Grigory)f Lysak. Using a combination of putty, oil paint, and sometimes newspaper, he creates these textural, almost sculptural paintings of dramatic skies and fantastical architecture, and they’re really fascinating to me. They seem like windows into another world.

Lysak always starts with a highly-textured oil painting. He then photographs the paintings, and adds the crisper elements – usually the architecture – digitally, first using non-text-prompted AI, then digitally manipulating all the pieces until they look right to him. He rarely sells his oils, but his finished prints are equally stunning.

You can follow Gregory Lysak on his website and on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
