What’s For Dinner?

Today’s beautiful thing is entirely practical, and positively genius. It’s a website that lets you enter the foods currently in your house and gives you recipes based on them. Has the internet ever produced anything more useful? I doubt it. And the recipes it offers up aren’t just the predictable cheese omelette or spaghetti with garlic and oil. Those are there, sure, but so are creative ideas that you might never have come to on your own.

Using it is simple. The website assumes only that you have salt, pepper, and water. You can then use the bar on the left to add your current ingredients by clicking on the more common items organized by type (fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, etc.). You can also look up items not listed using the search bar at the top. The center section tells you how many recipes you have available. You can filter them by things like cuisine, meal type (lunch, quick and easy, oven free, etc.), diet (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and lactose free), and preparation time. You can then view the recipes online, print, save, etc. I tried a number of different ingredient and filter configurations, and I couldn’t stump the website!

In my opinion, the most valuable thing about the website is that if you employ it to use up what’s fresh in your house, you can have a zero-waste kitchen! That and the fact that you don’t have to leave your house…

You can use the eminently-practical Supercook on their website. You can also download the app (there’s an app!) on Google Play and follow them on Facebook.

One of the things I hate the most is the dreaming up and making dinner thing. Every. Single. Day. I don’t know how my mom did it for the 6 of us. There’s only 2 in my household, but I still hate doing it. Been married 36 years and I’m ready to retire from making meals. Maybe this will help…though I need another app that actually MAKES the stuff.

LOL. Same. I think what you need is staff. Wouldn’t that be so nice?

Oooooohhhh…..STAFF! Why didn’t I think of that? That would be so perfect. Well I guess I almost do. I pay someone to clean the house every other week, and though she doesn’t do it as well as I had hoped at least I’m not doing the bathrooms and kitchen. And I pay someone to mow my lawn and he does a fine job. Even though I LIKE mowing the lawn it’s nice not to have to do it in this heat. And I even, this year, pay someone to help me weed. We put in a lot of gardens over the 34 years we’ve lived here and now, at age 70, I find myself getting really tired trying to keep them all up. So my weeder and I do it together and it’s more fun. SO I guess I DO have staff. Now to find a cook…

That is a really useful tool! My way of reducing food waste and keeping to budget is that I am an intense meal planner and I then only purchase items that are on the shopping list that plan generates. However, there are definitely times when the meal plan goes to pot and I need to have a rethink and this is when a website like this would really come in clutch for me. I will need to give it a try.
