Happy Pride, everyone! I’ve got something pretty amazing for you today
Photographer iO Tillett Wright had a very interesting childhood, which is likely at least part of the reason she’s such an interesting adult. I’m a little crazed today, so I’ll let her tell you.
When you’re done listening to her excellent Ted Talk, take a look at the project she talks about, the Self-Evident Project. You won’t be disappointed!

Donna – Thank you for all the postings of support. This visibility is what helps us continue to break down barriers and dissolve prejudices. Happy Pride!

LOL – I didn’t want to assume :). But support from within our community counts also! Thanks and Happy Pride to you as well!

What an excellent talk. She spoke really very eloquently about issues of diversity and equality that really ought to and need to matter to everyone regardless of where they chart on the sexuality spectrum. I’m an LGBT+ ally not simply because I have close relatives and friends who are gay and transgender but because I passionately believe in human rights and that is what it boils down to: shared humanity regardless of those boxes. I, therefore, found myself nodding along throughout this talk.
I also hope to be as cool as her parents were when it comes to parenting my own kids.

I would love to be that cool, but the idea of letting my child have a career in Hollywood as a gender other than their physical one seems awfully risky. I wouldn’t want to expose them to potential public venom. I imagine having a fluid-gendered child is challenging (and rewarding) enough without worrying about tabloids and paparazzi.

Well yes. I am far too risk averse and too much of a control freak to go that far. However, I admire their creation of a familial culture and environment whereby she knew she would be loved, respected, nurtured and supported to be whoever she was at any given age.

New York City is this awesome, unrealistic bubble. Like Narnia with dirt. If only these social explorations could exist everywhere.

Awesome! She is a wonderfully likable person. I was a bit perplexed (and maybe it is just me) because it seemed to take the audience a little bit to warm up to her. Maybe I read their body language wrong. When they stood up at the end of her talk, though, I was right there with them. Excellent, Donna.

I liked her instantly, too! She’s one of those people I immediately wanted to go get a beer with.

I thought she was a very likeable person as well. What an extraordinary life she has had, having said that, it seems as though her parents did a damn good job of bringing her up. She is very well-spoken funny and engaging and I think her project is wonderful. Such a simple idea but says so much, 🙂

What a wonderful presentation. A friend introduced me, years ago, to her girlfriend by saying, “This is Paula. She’s straight, not narrow.” I surely hope artists like you and iO Tillet Wright continue to make more of us “not narrow.”
