Since I’m on vacation this week, this seemed especially fitting, since it reminds me of vacations we took as a child. These are the photos of Andy Sweet, who chronicled Miami in the 1970s like no one else.

His subjects were the denizens of some of the more senior-citizen-friendly locales around Miami, and his portraits are so evocative of the time and the place, you feel as if they’re your own old family photos. He loved them all equally; the well off and the welfare recipients, the natives and the snow birds. And if the photos are any indication, they loved him back.

Tragically, Sweet was murdered (stabbed 29 times) in 1982. He was just 29 years old. Coincidence? Who knows. His parents paid an art storage facility to store his negatives, but the facility lost them all in 2003. Those poor people. His sister, Ellen Sweet Moss, formed the Andy Sweet Photo Legacy a few years later, and the organization has been gathering prints to restore the collection ever since.

The organization’s website is a wonder, and if you like his photos, you will no doubt enjoy the Facebook page dedicated to his work as well.

OMG, Donna! My parents had photo albums of pictures just like these! What a shame so much was lost, including Andy Sweet himself. Sad.

I confess I had never heard of Andy Sweet but his photographic style reminds me very much of that of Martin Parr whose work I admire. I must go and check out the links you have provided in order to learn more.

It’s funny, I grew up in San Diego, Ca. in the 70’s and the photos look exactly like how I remember that time. Maybe we were a little more casually dressed (not on vacation), but the polyester was apparently a mainstay back then on both coasts.

I love the photo of the young-at-heart lady with the New Year tiara and plastic leis!

I absolutely love these photos, but the brutal murder of Sweet makes me so sad. I think it’s wonderful that his sister formed the organization that is gathering his work.
