I watched the first of the videos below for a full minute without the sound, and thought, “This really needs that plastic bag instrumental piece from American Beauty…” Then I turned on the sound, and there it was.

Brooklyn native Daniel Wurtzel sculpts with air. When I read that, my first (sarcastic New Yorker) thought was “of course he does. No one in Brooklyn has room for anything more substantial.” Turns out, though, he really does use moving air to make shapes. His installations and performances have been seen all over the world. He employs the use of large fans, and masterfully places silk scarves (or plastic or styrofoam peanuts or feathers) in their way and lets them play together. Sometimes, there is a performer to interact with the scarves, sometimes not, but the results are always peaceful and stunning and somehow spiritual. His works were even incorporated into the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics closing ceremony, the Canali menswear fashion show, and Cirque du Soleil, to name a few!

There are many more videos on his YouTube channel and on his website. Go explore. It’s fun!

You’re right, the videos are very peaceful, almost mesmerizing. I think that has as much to do with the music as the fan art because the ones without music didn’t give me that same vibe. It is sorta like that Disney movie Fantasia. Every kid I ever knew said that they hated that movie, but almost every parent told me that they used that movie to get their kids to go to sleep, because of it’s classical music and hypnotic imagery.

Lovely, but not at all what I expected (better!) as I was expecting painted hand fans.

Did you notice that at the Paris event nobody seems to be watching? All the people seem to be schmoozing.
