What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Solid Potato Salad!

rossThis week is being a jerk. It’s not all bad, but it’s a lot of work and a lot of moving parts and a lot more being “on” than I’m used to. I needed something to cheer me up, and this is what I found.

The Ross Sisters were a contortionist/vocal group who gained brief popularity with their number in the 1944 “Broadway Rhythm.” The song is called “Solid Potato Salad,” and while it makes no sense, it nonetheless makes a big impression. Picture the Andrews Sisters. Now remove their spines. The video starts out cute, but it rapidly takes a turn for the WTF. You’re welcome!

Since I’m assuming you’d love some company for your misery, here’s an unprepared group of youths watching it for the first time.

I have committed to spending part of every day looking for at least one beautiful thing, and sharing what I find with you lovelies!

  1. You are such a… You often make me watch everything till the end, like it, comment on it and then send it off, in this case to mom who is a huge Andrews Sisters fan 😀

  6. I think with this video share you have surpassed yourself. This is the best thing I have seen on the internet in ages. I admit that the title of Solid Potato Salad made me dry heave but I soon forgot my queasiness when the contortionist stunts began. What a marvel! I love the way it was all choreographed as if those sisters have been practicing bending over farm equipment their entire lives and it was perfectly normal. Each stunt made me think “That’s my favourite” and then they would escalate and I had a new favourite. Incredible. Sublimely weird. Made my joints ache in some sort of weird psychosomatic empathy thing. But glorious. Now I need to gather my kids around to share it with them.

  7. So glad you posted this! I saw a very brief clip on TV years ago (I think it was in something about acts that never quite caught on), and always wondered Who, When, Where? Now I know!

    • Glad to help! It’s a shame they never really caught on. I would think their singing and their looks alone were strong enough to get them somewhere. Then you add in the fact that they’re made of pipe cleaners, and it seems like a winning proposition.
