Today’s musical beautiful thing is a big departure for me, but stick with it. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Meet Mike Massé and Jeff Hall. Two local lawyers (Mike is a retired public defender and Jeff is a prosecutor) who spent their free time playing small gigs around town. Their longest-standing engagement was at the Pie Pizzeria where they performed weekly for 20 years. Someone suggested to them that they should put up videos of their performances on YouTube. Mike did just that. He had a nice little YouTube channel full of live recordings made at Pie Pizzeria. Then everything changed.
Thanks to some generous link sharing and some strangers with a good ear, the videos went viral. I mean really viral. His YouTube channel has had over 30 million views, and their live cover of Toto’s “Africa” is solely responsible for nearly 6 million of them. Thanks to his internet success, Mike was able to realize his dream of becoming a full-time musician, and he is now playing bookings all over the world.
These two are a real inspiration to me. They may look like a couple of dads playing through a mid-life crisis, but the sounds they make together are pure magic.
And I don’t know how they pulled this off with a guitar, a bass, and two singers, but this is the best ABBA cover ever.
I told myself I was going to stick to the live recordings, but this one was so perfect, I couldn’t resist including it. Think of it as an encore.

It’s kind of shocking how good they are. And I don’t feel like poor Jeff gets enough attention, either. His harmonies are tight!

There are so many talented people that are not mainstream that it amazes me. Great videos and music. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to practice my ukulele much more than I do.

I was really blown away by these guys. And I almost love an exceptional amateur more than I do an acknowledged pro.

Thanks, Donna. I’d already saved Africa to my Pinterest page, but I never thought to see if there were others. They really do a great job.

How did I miss this post first time around? I am glad your birthday review brought me back to it. They are really good quality for a cover band gigging in a local eatery. I have been trapped in a space with some woeful musical turns when out to eat in times past but I would probably malinger over drinks if my ears were being treated to this.

Aren’t they fantastic? I know what you mean. We get some pretty terrible musician in local restaurants sometimes. It’s so bad that when we’re eating and Beloved sees someone walk in with a drum kit or a guitar, no matter where we are in the meal, she starts frantically calling for the check. Makes me laugh every time.
