Zack Dougherty (A.K.A. Hateplow) takes HD photos of statues and other 3D objects, then he turns them into animated GIFs of the highest order. Like the animation of DarkAngelØne, his GIFs add movement to static pieces, but unlike the other artist’s work, Dougherty creates entirely new elements which are revealed either under the original or in front of it. Many of the sculptures have been relocated (digitally, of course) in incongruous places by Dougherty as well. I find the overall effect of these pieces really interesting and compelling. Hope you like them, too!

Ever since the stone angels appeared in Dr Who I have not been able to look at statues in the same way.

The best part of this is the clear representation of the artist making art, irrespective of the medium. This is the story to help artists who use digital tools be better understood and respected as creatives , not merely technicians. Hateplow speaks of the power of stone and permanence of internet works of art. I think his desire to create, which has existed in us since we were “us,” expressed in this very new format is a statement – a comforting reminder – that art will endure. Good news!
