Lost in Space

You may recall that a few weeks ago, I featured the beautiful glasswork of Shelly Muzylowski. Today, we’re taking a look at her husband’s very different style of glass sculpture. These are the sci fi-licious creations of Rik Allen. While Muzylowski’s work was very earthy, reminiscent of cave paintings and organic shapes, Allen’s visions are entirely other-worldly.

“My work is as much about outer space as inner space. At first glance, the work may seem to be all about the exploration of the cosmos, but a closer look reveals more humble elements that speak of memory and transparency, revealing inner and outward perspectives. By incorporating elements that appear worn and experienced, as well as vestiges of an earlier era, I hope to give the work a sense of experimentation, invention, and exploration.” -Rik Allen Mission Statement

Although looking at the photos of these works on Allen’s website, I had the impression that they were small, after I did a little digging I was surprised to learn they can be up to 12 feet tall! There’s something adorably retro about them, which makes them seem a bit more organic somehow. It’s like instead of looking like the future, they manage to give the impression they’re the past’s version of the future. It’s all very 1920’s-1950’s, and I love it!
