This is the weirdly wonderful Foxtrott with their single Shaky Hands. I like the song okay, but on its own, it never would have made the cut. No, it’s the music video I can’t stop playing.
Directed by Kevin Calero, it features a troupe of 30 or so very talented dancers moving, climbing, and falling in stunning, abrupt rhythm in a quarry. The whole thing is pretty surreal, but in a strikingly beautiful way. The harshness of the landscape and the way the dancers nearly blend into it make them feel more like ants or automatons than like individuals.
I was sure the camerawork had been done using drones, but when I watched the making of video, it was all crane work. I’m really impressed that they achieved those viewpoints with anything anchored to the earth, but somehow they managed it. The camerawork adds to the overall surreality of the video. I feel like this one is going to haunt me.
And if you enjoyed that video, you might want to watch their earlier video for “Driven.”
