Gemma Correll
Artist Gemma Correll suffers from anxiety and depression, but art above notwithstanding, she’s not taking it lying down.
“I honestly think that humour can be a saviour at times of distress or, if you just live with a constant level of anxiety and depression like I do, I do think that people should speak more freely about anxiety. I know that I would have felt a little better as an anxiety-ridden teenager if I knew that I wasn’t completely alone in my fears.”
The humor in her art is genuinely funny, perfect in it simplicity, and refreshing in its honesty. I think it’s really brave the way she puts her fears out there for everyone to see. It’s like she’s gently educating us as she’s giving us permission to laugh. I’m really impressed with the way her honesty removes the stigma from her disorder (disorders?).
As fun as her website is, it’s her Tumblr that’s really captivated me, because I can really see the details of her work. I hope you enjoy her hilarious self-awareness as much as I did.

This is so clever and is something that I can really relate to. She has expressed so well how many of us feel through her art. Brilliant.

The illustrations are so charming and clever. I love the way she’s made the abstract concrete. I could relate to several of these, especially the horror movie posters and the hanging out with pets at social gatherings.

Humor is how I cope with the world. People think I am a cynic and sometimes negative, but if I didn’t joke that way I’d walk around in a state of high anxiety and anger myself.

I am exactly the same! I try to keep things relatively positive in the blog, but my in-person demeanor involves loads of self-deprecation and dark humor.
