Gabriel Schama

Gabriel Schama makes beautiful Art Deco-influenced sculptures with the help of his “laser cutter, Elsie.” I like him already. He (and Elsie) create these amazingly-precise layered compositions of plywood, paper, acrylics, and leather. I love the pieces’ geometric lines, their architectural feel, and their utter uniqueness.

Schama’s ability to envision so many layers at once and make them all work together so harmoniously is truly remarkable. Oh, and he and Elsie don’t always work together. Sometimes, he goes it alone. Watch this!

As I debate leaving my rapidly collapsing creative job in favor of focusing on my own artistic pursuits that are just beginning to gain momentum, its inspiring to see the artists you feature who have made their work a priority and it appears to be paying off. Thanks!

These are astounding. When I watched the video, he had sped it up so much that I could only conclude he was using wizardry. I love the more monochromatic pieces. The more architectural ones definitely remind me of those Art Deco metal plaques, like the ones in the foyer of the Empire State Building. I’ve been fancying having a try at paper cutting as an art form (not at this Jedi master level obviously) but I stall trying because I reckon I would end up slicing the knife through the wrong piece after hours of meticulous, finger aching cutting.

Breathtaking! And I did gasp when I realized in the video he was layering and cutting bit by bit – such attention to detail.
