This is the lovely work of muralist/bee lover Matt Willey, who pledged to personally paint 50,000 endangered honey bees in 50 murals around the world. 50,000 is roughly the number of bees needed to sustain a healthy beehive. Willey founded the organization known as The Good of the Hive, which raises awareness about the current struggle and population decline of honeybees while celebrating their incredible behaviors.

Willey describes painting as being “a little magical,” and that’s certainly true of his bees. The video below is of the process of creating the mural for the Burt’s Bees headquarters in North Carolina.

If you’d like to help Willey’s efforts on behalf of the bees, go to his little online shop. There’s prints and tshirts, and even a hand-painted skateboard deck, and proceeds to go help save the bees.
