The Dead South

I’ve been an on-again-off-again fan of country music since a friend introduced me to Mary Chapin Carpenter in the early nineties. I have spent many a happy hour bellowing along with the ladies of country including Reba McEntire, Alison Krauss, the Dixie Chicks, Trisha Yearwood, and more recently, Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves. But while I love the women’s voices, I never really developed a taste for male country singers’ sound until our recent trip to Nashville. Now, I’m kind of hooked.

These boys are known as The Dead South. While it seems likely our politics wouldn’t line up, I’m really enjoying their rough, catchy sound, and their driving banjo music. They’re not strictly country, but more of a blend of a number of styles including folk, skiffle, and bluegrass. Toronto Music Reviews calls it hillbilly music, and I guess that’s as good a label as any.

Have a happy Saturday!

Hi Donna – Very entertaining indeed. I have a real fondness for banjo plucker music. I particularly enjoy listening to Larry Sparkes and the Lonesome Ramblers – older style music but just as entertaining as these boys. Thank you from jane in Australia

    Love ’em. They’re quirky, unclassifiable.

Hot August Night, not Nights. If you’re a stickler for detail. Apparently I am.

I’m a bit partial to vintage country music (I’ve shared that I’m a Glen Campbell and Dolly fan before) and I love the sound of the banjo so much that learning to play is on my list of things to do when I retire or am a lady of leisure – whichever comes first and hopefully prior to death. I do, therefore, like the vibe of this group but something I can’t put my finger on makes it not quite my thing. I am, however, going to run their music past my Bluegrass loving father-in-law.

I love this sound. Why do you think your politics might differ?

More than the music, I love the way this video was produced, how seamless the scene changes are visually. Thanks for sharing!

I love The Dead South! I discovered them a few months ago and “In Hell I’ll Be Good Company” is the first song I listened to. Their sound is so eclectic and raw, especially with that awesome cello player. So happy to hear a positive review about them!
