Luxury electric yacht design company TYDE teamed up with BMW to create the craziest, most futuristic vessel ever. This is The Icon, and not only does it look gorgeous in the water, it even flies (a little)! Once you hit 18 knots, the boat actually skims the water, making for a smoother riding experience. The 43-foot yacht “features sound design from legendary composer Hans Zimmer.” I have no idea what that means, but I’m sure it’s fancy. And for €1,900,000 (roughly $2 million), it had better be fancy!
TYDE is known for its gorgeous, innovative design and its commitment to sustainability, not something you hear often among yacht manufacturers. And not only does the boat not use fossil fuels, when in hydrofoil (flying) mode, it also reduces the disturbance to sea life.
“Humans accustomed to handling the wheel of a car or boat almost instinctually expect acceleration to come with a crescendo of rumbling vrooms—not so with The Icon. The Tyde’s twin 135-hp/100-kW Torqeedo engines are mouse-on-cotton quiet. That trait, coupled with the foiling technology, made piloting this boat an experience unlike any I’d ever had. Another noticeable absence here, is the wake, which is infinitesimal. With just the foils in the water, there simply isn’t enough material slicing through the water for the boat to throw anything out behind it. This minimization of drag slashes a boat’s energy usage by 80-percent versus a monohull, according to Ballin, who describes foiling technology as a “magic moment” for the industry.”

Wow, The Icon sounds like a real game-changer in the world of luxury yachts! The flying feature and environmental focus are truly innovative, and it’s fascinating how sound design from Hans Zimmer could further enhance the experience. While the price tag might be out of reach for most, it’s exciting to see what this could mean for the future of sustainable, luxurious seafaring. While its amphibious features are impressive, I’m still partial to the classic elegance of a grand steamship, carving through the waves with its majestic presence. But who knows, maybe one day we’ll see amphibious steamships gliding silently and serenely across the water!

That’s a lovely vision! Perhaps this could be the steamship’s tender!
