I learned about today’s beautiful thing while reading the bio of last Friday’s artist, Jamie Lee Gentile. This is the New Mexico passive solar house company known as Earthship Biotecture. They are a company that designs and builds self-sufficient houses, which they call vessels, out of recycled materials. These houses catch, store and filter rainwater, which is used three times. First as drinking and bathing water, then to grow plants, and finally, the plant runoff is used to flush the toilets. These remarkable structures treat their own sewage and passively heat and cool themselves.
Earthship also teaches people to build their own autonomous houses at their Earthship Academy and in their lecture series. And if you want to try before you buy, you can even book a vacation in one of their sustainable, autonomous houses near Taos, New Mexico!
You can learn more about Earthship Biotecture on their website and on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

I love the sustainability element but I also think the architectural style is fun and the interior spaces look warm and welcoming. I could definitely imagine living in a house like that. Also, I have loved bottle walls since I first saw one in a ghost town so that’s a plus.

When I read the description, I was expecting something kind of cold and impersonal, but they’re really lovely!

So, my spouse and I both *love* the Earthship concept, but…I visited the Taos community a few years ago and the vibe is: Cult-ish. Also, it’s not a friendly seeming ‘hood, lots of “no photos” (lol) signs, lots of “no trespassing” signs. They want you to come look at their model and donate money (?) but then GTFO. Also, a huge amount of stickers, etc that say things like, “Climate change? BRING IT” because of the survivalist mindset of exclusivity. We want an Earth Ship, but not near any of the rest of them, lol. I’m a borderline prepper, but I am not busy fantasizing about a post-apocalyptic scenario where I…WIN. (required caveat of Not All EarthShip owners, blah blah but the one in Taos, where I’ve been…not my vibe atall).

Good to know! When I read “off the grid,” I did envision gun hoarding and an end-of-days mentality. Doesn’t sound very welcoming as a community, but I’m definitely interested in their self-sufficient designs!

Love the idea and the plants are a real plus but…totally out of reach for most of us.
