One of the most recognizable names in spoken word poetry, Rudy Francisco writes poems so brimming with humor and music and honesty and feeling, I cannot choose a favorite. Francisco’s work often touches on the issues of race, class, gender, and religion, but he presents these potentially contentious topics in the form of personal stories and revelations, making them so much easier to hear. His work never puts the listener on the defensive. As wonderful as his words are, I think his ability to connect with his audience is perhaps his best talent.
The goal of Francisco’s work is to “promote healthy dialogue, discourse, and social change.” The poet is also a great believer in the value of mentorship, and he seeks to cultivate young artists, exposing them to the genre of spoken word poetry. He is also often a guest lecturer/performer at colleges and universities across the country.
You can follow the magnificent Rudy Francisco on his website and on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
