The Kaua‘i Humane Society has a program I think would work almost everywhere. The program allows visitors to “check out” a rescue dog for the day. Socializing the dogs is good for the animals and for the lucky people who get to be their companions for the day. The Field Trips for Shelter Dogs program is dedicated to the memory of lifelong animal advocate Jian Mehta. In his short life, Mehta, who passed at the age of 23 from cancer, had a huge impact on the rescue animal population in Kaua‘i.
Because the Kaua’i Human Society is the only open animal shelter on the island, they are always operating at more than capacity, but the Field Trip program has gone a long way toward helping get these precious animals adopted.
You can learn more about the Kaua’i Human Society’s Field Trips for Shelter Dogs program on their website, and you can follow the Humane Society on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

I follow Teddy, a Golden Retriever, on TikTok and his owner has something similar: Shelter Dog Saturday. He is in South Carolina and pays for all adoption fees so if his followers want to adopt a featured dog, everything has been already paid for.

I love this idea and agree it should be rolled out to other shelters across the nation – across the globe. I bet this leads to a whole lot of wonderful dogs being adopted but it also gives humans and dogs some lovely interactions even if they don’t become forever family. Before we adopted the cats, my boys were desperate for a dog but our lifestyle just doesn’t suit having a pet dog. They would have loved a programme like this that would have allowed us to borrow a dog for a day.

My brother and sister-in-law have fostered dogs on and off for years (but I believe the good ones they keep for themselves).
