What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

A Tragedy

I am a bit shaken. Over the weekend, someone we knew from Fire Island was struck and killed coming home from her DJing job, leaving her wife, family, and friends in total shock. We weren’t close, but she was an iconic presence in our little beach town, and I know many people who were very tight with her. It’s a terrible loss for our community, but what’s really knocked me off my axis is the reminder that one of us could just not come home some day. No warning, no goodbye, no preparation. We make our plans and our calendars fill up. We get busy and put off things like making visits and returning calls, thinking “I’ll get to it tomorrow.” Then there is no tomorrow. It seems wildly unfair and completely unfathomable.

Beloved and I were both similarly affected by Stacy’s passing, as I suspect were many other couples as well. We have found ourselves holding on just a little bit tighter, being just a little bit more patient, being a little more present. I can’t stop thinking about Stacey’s poor wife, and I don’t know about Beloved, but my dreams have been just awful. When I heard the song below yesterday, No One Gets Out Alive by Maggie Rose, I knew I had to share. It seems just right.

Buy the house visit Rome
Wear the dress
That stops the show
Don’t you know
No one gets out alive

So stay a while here on the swing
Let’s pretend we’ll always be together
‘Cause there’s no way that we could know
When we’ll go where all things go forever
I’m gonna hope for better

Watch the sky
From a hill
Do what you can
To make time stand still
‘Cause you know
No one gets out alive

So bring the wine and celebrate
Let’s pretend that we’ll always be together
There’s no way that we could know
When we’ll go where all things go forever
I’m gonna hope for better

Hold your friends
Forgive the night
Die to love
And live your life
Don’t you know
No one gets out alive

– No One Gets Out Alive by Maggie Rose

This one’s for you, Stacey. If there’s a heaven, I’m sure you’ve got everyone on their feet dancing, just like you did in Cherry Grove.

You can follow Maggie Rose on her website and on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

How sad. It sounds like Stacy loved making people happy. Perhaps she would have wanted you to dance, have a glass of wine in her memory and be happy with what you have.

I went and found an article about the crash, didn’t realize it was with a truck, what’s called an under-ride crash, where a person or vehicle slides under a truck. NYC requires trucks that have contracts with the city to have underride guards, but odds are the oil truck was not under contract to the city.

We at the Truck Safety Coalition (which I’ve written about on occasion) have been working for literally years to get side underride guards mandated on all commercial trucks. It’s a very uphill battle. But at least some in Congress have heard of them now. The DOT has now heard of them. Some cities are starting to require them on trucks coming into their cities. There’s a movement, mostly led by families of victims.

Someone from the Truck Safety Coalition will likely reach out to her family. In time they may want to join our fight. Also we may provide some comfort in the knowledge they are not alone.

This is so sad. And the suddenness and shock of this loss is what makes one realize how precious and fragile each of our lives are. Sending you lots of love.

Yeah, we’ve been dealing with this the past year, and your sentiments and the song are exactly what Don and I have had to face. He had a stroke last May; thankfully has now pretty much fully recovered, but it really underlined how fragile we all are, so we too hold each other a little tighter. We know, in a way that we hadn’t previously faced, that the end will come. Hugs to you and Beloved.

Hugs right back to you and Don! I didn’t know. That must have been terrifying. I have good friends who dealt with the same thing last year. He seems to be regaining most of what he lost, but it’s been a long road. Sending love.
