Today’s marvelous professional was found on Andrea Huelsenbeck’s lovey weekly feature Creative Juice. Go give her some love!

Dog behaviorist and author Freya V. Locke is an expert on the subject of training dogs. There are certainly plenty of those out there, but what struck me about Locke is that she focuses on ONLY positive reinforcement, thereby deepening your connection with your pooch while training them to avoid bad behaviors. Her force-free methods are geared to always making sure the dog is comfortable, and by all accounts, she gets great results.

“I believe wholly in my Fun Not Fear® philosophy and ethics, and you will never see me recommend anything your dog will find aversive. We celebrate the bond between humans and dogs. We do it through positive reinforcement, empathy, and fun. We’re not just teaching dogs. We are building a community. In it, every dog has the chance to thrive in a loving, fear-free place.”

I have never trained a dog but I would definitely appreciate guidance from this positive approach if I was ever in that position.

I strongly believe that all dogs should get training. It’s good for them, it’s good for their people, and it’s good for everyone they encounter. Dogs just want to please you, so why wouldn’t you teach them how to do that? And I really love this approach. Everyone wins!

I’ll be following Freya’s or at least the YouTube channel for the second video. I’m already watching Sitting with Dogs, so now I can alternate.

    Hi,

I just found this, and I am stunned – thank you so very much for writing such lovely things!

Training with rewards is all that is ever needed, when it comes to our dogs. It’s about teaching what we DO want rather than what we do not.

More than that, it’s about helping dogs navigate the world so that they can be happy and healthy. Mostly, behaviour issues are a communication from the dog that something is not right, or that they are in pain or afraid. If we can sort the cause out, the behaviour generally sorts itself.

Aww, I shall be smiling all day now!

    Freya
