Today’s artist is something of a mystery, but that doesn’t make them any less entertaining. These are the remarkable one-person percussion performances by Yowie Deschanel. Yowie is maybe not among the most charismatic performers I’ve featured on this blog, but their skill is right up there with the best of the best. They have a distinctive look which always includes colorful hair and nails, sunglasses, and there is nearly always a flower on their head.
I actually find it kind of intriguing that they never speak, keeping it all about the music. Good for them! The performances all start simple, but they rapidly increase in mind-blowing difficulty. How they keep so perfectly on beat is beyond me. I found their performances incredibly relaxing. The instrument they are playing is called an asalato, A.K.A. kashaka, shakers, and clickers. While I did find videos featuring other artists playing the instrument, I didn’t find anyone more talented than Deschanel.
You can see more of Yowie Deschanel’s videos on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
