Artist, author, playwright and self-titled daydreamer Kate Jarvik Birch lives a very creative life. It’s hard not to be a bit jealous of this talented young woman who has found a way to be a multi-potentialite while still supporting herself, something I never figured out how to do. It’s her art on which I want to focus today. In her painting-a-day series, Birch has a way of capturing ubiquitous household items and turning them into everyday marvels. What’s more, her time-lapse shorts on TikTok may be every bit as fascinating as the resulting works of art.
Birch’s art is accessible enough to be carried in stores like Target, Pier One, and World Market, but that doesn’t mean it’s trite or commonplace. I find it utterly charming (and very skillful!). And those humble objects can have deeper meaning to us.
“I’m one of those people who find beauty pretty much everywhere she looks, so it’s kind of a no-brainer that I often find myself painting everyday objects. In my opinion, you don’t have to look far to find art, whether it’s in a shadow cast by a piece of fruit or in the clear cellophane wrapper of a piece of candy. I’m often inspired by the mundane, but I get a lot of joy from transforming it. And I’m always pleased when these ordinary objects really connect with my audience. These are the objects that surround us, and we often don’t realize how much significance they have in our lives. I once painted a can of cranberry sauce and my mom made fun of me for painting something that seemed so trivial, but later that day, I sold it to a woman who’d lost her own mother the year before and had this amazing memory of her serving cranberry sauce.
