Manami Sasaki

Today’s marvelous thing was discovered by the ever-lovely Alison & Don of Adventures in Wonderland.

Today, we’re looking at some next-level food art by Japanese artist Manami Sasaki. The COVID-related lockdown in 2020 made many artists turn to materials they had around the house, and Sasaki turned to… Toast. You read that right. Using edible art supplies including squid ink for drawing fine details, the artist has created a remarkable range of art-on-toast. But while Sasaki’s styles may vary, most of her works harken back to traditional Japanese art.

“I was getting cooped up during quarantine and decided to create a habit that makes me want to look forward to getting up early in the morning. Toast is a very easy medium to use because you can put both fruits and vegetables on it. I wanted to explore the many possibilities within the framework of toast.”

You can see all of Manami Sasaki’s edible art on her Instagram.

Once more I marvel at the creativity of the human mind. Using toast as a substrate is not something most people, myself included, would ever have come up with but this artist has achieved results that make it seem as if it should have been obvious. I am impressed with the artistry but also the fact that the art work is so sharp and crisp. I would have imagined the pigments would bleed all over the place on something as absorbent as toast. All round impressive.
