The Sign Painter

Eddy Bennett

UK-based glass and gold leaf artist Eddy Bennett is bringing back an amazing art form, and I’m completely fascinated with his process. Like glass door, window, and sign painters of the Victorian era, Bennett paints front-to-back signs and art on the reverse side of glass like it’s nothing. His brush control is truly mind-blowing. I can’t wrap my brain around how precise every layer needs to be, but he seems to do it all freehand. The man is magic!

And as fascinating as I find his process, I am equally enamored of his design style. To take something traditional-looking like turn-of-the-century-style typography and successfully merge it with images and colors much more in keeping with pop art takes a true artistic genius.

You can see more of Eddy Bennett’s remarkable art on his website and on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

‘NICE LIFE’ 🌻 tag someone who needs a friendly reminder ❤️ ‘Nice Life’ is my latest original artwork, which has been hand painted in reverse onto glass, with acid etching, 23ct gold, mother of Pearl, and brush blended enamels. A sweet reminder that the simplest things in life can make you happy – just like this resplendent sunflower, basking in the sun! #eddybennett #nicelife #reverseglass #gilding #gold #sunflower #contemporaryart #art #satisfying #signpainter #pinstriping #positivevibes

Making good progress on this new artwork that I started all the way back in February! This will (hopefully) be ready for an art fair next month. A massive thank you to the king that is @davesmithartist, who helped me cut a perfect puntie and slump the perfect convex profile. It’s certainly not something I could do alone, and his knowledge is second to none! #eddybennett #reverseglass #gilding #convexmirror #gold #brilliantcutting #signpainter #contemporaryart #pinstriping #art #eddyartist

The first ‘Labour of Love’ original completed! Another 4 more to finish painting and gilding, which will all be various colour combinations. Each one is hand painted, acid etched, and gilded with 23ct gold. Each piece will be framed in a solid mango wood frame. . . . . #eddybennett #labouroflove #peach #spring #reverseglass #blossom #gilding #goldleaf #signpainter #contemporaryart #kitsch #pinstriping

Well this is Wonderful!! Evokes such good memories; I was taught sign painting back in 1972 by a local master of his trade, he did many of the Mail Pouch barns all over the east coast…all free hand using the 1 shot paint which is the best ever made. I even helped him gold leaf the local bank window. At 14 yrs old it was a great experience for me and I will always remember Mr. Andy Loy fondly. Even his keg in an old refrigerator with the tap coming out the door….yet he could hold a squirrel hair one stroke brush steady as can be! Then clean them with a stinky mixture of turpentine and lard to keep the bristles soft. This talented artist hopefully has less stinky clean up these days!!

thanks so much for this OBT!!!

Beautifully done..Being that steady with a brush is a trick I don’t have in my art bag.

The precision is incredible and watching the confidence with which he moves his brushes is impressive. I found it very soothing to watch each process video. I am glad someone is maintaining skills and talents that could easily become part of a bygone era. My Dad was actually a signwriter for vehicles decades ago, using similar techniques, so I really am heartened to see someone keeping such artisan skills alive.
