I first heard of the singer Raye when she appeared on Saturday Night Live about six months ago. I confess I usually listen to a few seconds of the musical artists, then typically skip ahead to the next sketch. This one stopped me dead. The best way to describe her is a modern-day Billie Holliday. And just like the incomparable Ms. Holliday, she’s very much of her time. Her songs are very modern indeed, but there’s no denying her classic jazz connections. I’ve never heard hip hop with such obvious jazz roots. I know her music isn’t going to be for everyone (Beloved barely tolerated it), but I think it’s wonderful!
You can follow the luminescent Raye on her website and on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok (at least for now), and Facebook.

I absolutely LOVED her. Hadn’t heard of her either until the SNL episode. Have you seen her Tiny Desk concert? She’s just adorable 😀

I like her vibe a lot. Her approach of blending the contemporary with vintage music styles reminds me a lot of early Amy Winehouse. I don’t know that this is a style of music I would listen to in a focused way but I think it would be great for me to have on in the background when doing something creative.

Amy Winehouse! I can’t believe that didn’t come to me when I was writing this. Thank you for being the other half of my brain…

I ran across her on Tiny Desk, love her. She reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse and Corinne Bailey Rae, yet totally unique.
