Amsterdam street artist Frank de Ruwe, A.K.A. Frankey, is a street artist who has a wonderful way of injecting humor into otherwise unremarkable scenes and objects. His “interventions” transform public spaces from the mundane into surprising, funny art.
The artist says when he was studying product design, his instinct was to design objects in a way to make people smile or laugh, but his professors discouraged that urge in him. However, after reading the book Wall and Piece by Banksy, he was inspired to start making his own kind of art. And like Banksy, Frankey also took to the streets. And although in Amsterdam, art installations without permits are illegal, he is very careful never to damage any of the property involved in his street art.
You can follow Frankey on his website and on Instagram.

What a great creative eye this artist is to see the possibilities in the mundane fixtures of everyday streets and then to construct elements that generate such perfect humour. I appreciate the care they take to not make anything permanent so as to not cause damage. However, I do hope that authorities opt to keep these quirky little details that surely make people smile whenever they spot them. We need these little glimmers of joy and laughter.

His professor discouraged him from making fun art that would make people smile….what a shame. These are wonderful! They make people smile and cause no damage. You might want to rethink what you are teaching, Professor!

Exactly! Sometimes, arts teachers take themselves too seriously. It’s a real win when you find a teacher who still takes joy from their art.

The image at the top of the stone lion with the noisemaker sticking out of its mouth makes me want to buy them by the gross and stick them in every lion I can find. That’s right, Metropolitan Museum of Art lions, I’m talking to you!

My favourite is the Muppets ‘Beaker’ character tree at the bottom – I just love it! 🙂

That was the first piece of his that I saw. I knew I had to find out who was responsible for that bit of inspired madness…
