When I first spotted the remarkable insect above by Dutch artist Charlie Moon, I thought it was a hand-painted ceramic object. It turns out Moon instead works primarily in the digital art space. While it’s true that some of her works have been turned into IRL objects using 3D printing, mostly her work exists in the computer (and prints) only. I’m not mad about that, though I would truly love an object that looked like one of her fancy bugs.

Though she studied fine art and fashion and began with traditional painting, it was digital drawing that first really grabbed Moon’s attention. Now, she works in a combination of digital art and AI-assisted work, and technology has become her muse. It’s really interesting to me that she’s using technology to make art centered around something as earth-bound and non-technological as insects and other living things.

You can follow Charlie Moon Studio on her website and on Instagram, and Facebook.

These are beautiful. When I saw your first photo, I immediately thought of the scarab bracelets I had when I was younger. Remember them? Why, oh why, did I not save mine. No idea what happend to them…

My brain simply cannot accept that these are not physical, tangible objects. The artist has done an amazing job of creating a sense of depth and form. I absolutely love beetles so those particular pieces very much appeal to me.
