What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

The Littles

Frode Bolhuis

Netherlands-based clay artist Frode Bolhuis describes himself as a sculptor with a love for color. He creates diminutive pastel-colored sculptures of figures going about their interesting business. While they certainly sport hints of ancient cultures, they aren’t specific to any one ethnicity or culture. But their garb and their props seem to hint at a magical unknown race of tiny people. I want to shrink down to their size and follow them around to see where they go. I feel like there needs to be at the very least a children’s book or a Cirque du Soleil show about these fascinating characters.

The figures are part of a project Bolhuis calls The Daily Sculptures. It’s mind-blowing to think he makes one of these every day. He works in polymer clay which can be baked in under an hour in a conventional oven. That certainly does seem like a reasonable process, and it means that completing a sculpture in one day is a lot more feasible. But still, they’re all so different, both from each other and from anything else I’ve seen. What an endlessly creative person he must be!

You can see more of Frode Bolhuis’s lovely work on his website and on Instagram.

They are certainly different. Safe colors are nice.

How fun – and my step daughter has a small business with jewelry she makes with polymer clay – and it sure is a medium she enjoys working with – but I do not – however, artist Frode Bolhui seems to have found his niche and I am going to show this post to my fam
