The Girl With a Little Bit Extra

I am ashamed to admit that I only just learned about the world-famous singer/entertainer known as Danny La Rue. At one point, La Rue was considered the most famous performer in the world. The toast of London from the 1960s through the 1980s, he had his own cabaret nightclub in Hanover Square, and performed regularly both in the West End and on the BBC. He even played the lead role in the 1984 West End revival of Hello, Dolly and portrayed the evil stepmother in the 1986 UK TV remake of Cinderella. His delicious Royal Variety performance in 1969 below is how I was introduced to La Rue, and now, I’m hooked!

Famous for his drag performances where he did his own singing, La Rue was well known for his spot-on celebrity impressions from Margaret Thatcher to Zsa Zsa Gabor. It’s a shame that so many people have gotten so uptight about drag. It’s so much fun, and La Rue is just luminous on stage. He died in 2009 (again, how did I miss all this?), but his reputation for joyous performances lives on, thank goodness. Enjoy this beautiful, talented human (with outstanding legs)!

Along with Dame Edna Everage (Barry Humphries), Danny LaRue was a staple of my childhood and I definitely remember admiring his legs.
