Today, we’re looking at the entertaining, thought-provoking, disorienting photography by Brook DiDonato. The New York-based photographer is known for taking everyday scenes and turning them on their heads. Her photos represent glitches in the normal world. Many are self-portraits, and in all, bodies and objects are twisted beyond their normal bounds. Her images feel like AI mistakes, which particularly resonates with me.
DiDonato’s color palette is always a little retro, a little muted, a little Wes Anderson, which also gives a sense of nostalgia. But the memories seem like they’re remembered wrong, as if in a dream. Her surreal imagery is humorous, but also profoundly unsettling and somehow a bit sad. The photographer is apparently poking fun at the concept of the American Dream, another concept that hits me hard.
