Belgian chorographer Damien Jalet has completely blown me away. I first saw the music video for STORM by GENER8ION, and it’s so powerful, so full of intensity, I can’t stop watching. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, and it turns out Jalet’s work is all that unexpected and weird and wonderful. His pieces, while all very different, are thought provoking in a marvelous way. They completely took me out of myself, and I feel like they’re going to stay with me for a long time.
Jalet makes use off things I would never have thought of like scale and vertical spaces, and his choice of score is always, always interesting and unpredictable. But as much as I enjoyed his other pieces, I keep coming back to STORM. It’s about bullying and pain and damage and toxic masculinity, and it’s truly hypnotic unsettling and chilling and unspeakably beautiful in its way.
I am shocked to report that Damien Jalet doesn’t have much in the way of social media. I guess he’s too busy finding new ways to blow our minds. You can still follow him on Instagram and Facebook. If you need me, I’ll be over here rewatching STORM.
